I have always been interested in art and various forms of art. I thourougly enjoyed my museum visits in Italy and France. It made sense to me why some of the pieces I was admiring were priceless works of art. Often the artist was dead, some for several hundred years and they had created pieces that stood the test of time.
My feelings towards Modern/Contemporary Art were not quite the same. I often wondered what certain pieces meant and why the artist had created them the way they had. My previous boss was a collector of Modern Art pieces and the office was his gallery. For 6 years I questioned his taste and the price tag of his pieces.
When I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, I decided to take the guided tour thinking this will help me decipher the artwork. I don’t think the “ah ha” moment came till much later. My interpretation of modern/contemporary art is that it is not about liking it or disliking it, or trying to fit it in a certain box. It is supposed to make you think, feel, start conversations and be inspired. In a world where we are constantly running from one thing to another, art is supposed to make us stop, take a moment and appreciate what is going on within us and in the world around us…well that is my interpretation!
