This year I was fortunate enough to take my husband to the Golden Temple (Darbar Sahib) in Amritsar, India. The Dabar Sahib is a holy place for Sikhs and I had been here many times before. This was the first time I had a tourist with me.
I got a chance to show off some Sikh history, or rather regurgitate what I could remember. I bragged about the thousands of volunteers that work tireless each day in the Langar (food) hall where free food is served to the hundreds of thousands of people that visit the Darbar Sahib. I bragged about how no matter your religion, cast or belief everyone is welcomed into the Darbar Sahib. I bragged about Maharaja Ranjit Singh, in the nineteenth, covering the upper floors in gold, giving it its majestic appearance. I also bragged about the healing powers of the holy water that surrounds the Darbar Sahib. There is a lot on the internet on Sikh History and the Dabar Sahib if you are interested, as I will admit I am no expert.
As we weaved through thousands of other visitors out of the Golden Temple, I realized (maybe because I am older) why my parents always insisted we visit the Dabar Sahib. I felt in that moment a little bit lighter, calmer and happier. Was it because we had just been to Darbar Sahib?? Not sure maybe another visit will solve the puzzle….

I especially love the black and white pictures. Almost feels like from back in the past with years of history….times may have changed but the space is the same.
