Napa Valley always sounded like a land far far away. I had only heard of this beautiful wine valley mentioned in Hollywood movies (insert: I have lived most of my life in Southern Africa). I pictured polo players, fancy hats and hors d’oeuvres…oh wait that IS a day at the polo, but you get the idea. So I was very excited when we finally planned to visit this winery town.
Napa was less polo and more beautiful rolling green hills. The landscape consisted of hundreds and hundreds of grape vines, with splashes of wineries offering tastings and restaurants. We visited 3 different wineries and our favourite of the day was the small (non commercial) tastings offered at Saintsbury. Their wines were excellent as was their service and ambience. The tastings are held amongst the wine barrels, thus giving you a more rustic feel. Nothing like a day at the polo, as I had imagined!
